Organic fertiliser for potato growers

Organic fertiliser for potato growers

Growing quality potatoes starts with the soil. Whether you are producing premium, ware, seed or processing varieties, the right crop nutrition programme determines tuber size, skin finish, dry matter content and overall marketable yield. SoilWorx organic fertilisers deliver the high-potassium, slow-release nutrition that potato crops demand, while building the soil health that underpins consistent performance season after season.

Why potatoes need specialist crop nutrition

Potatoes are one of the most nutrient-demanding arable crops. A 50-tonne crop removes approximately 290 kg of potassium, 120 kg of nitrogen and 50 kg of phosphorus from the soil per hectare. Getting the balance wrong leads to problems: too much nitrogen produces excessive haulm growth at the expense of tubers; too little potassium compromises skin quality and storability.

The key nutritional priorities for potatoes are:

  • Potassium (K): The single most important nutrient for tuber development, skin quality and disease resistance.
  • Balanced base nutrition: Adequate P and moderate N to support establishment and canopy growth without excess.
  • Soil organic matter: Potatoes perform best in well-structured soils with good water retention and drainage.

The role of potassium in tuber development

Potassium plays a critical role at every stage of potato growth:

  • Tuber bulking: Potassium drives the transport of carbohydrates from leaves into developing tubers, increasing size.
  • Skin quality: Well-nourished tubers develop stronger, smoother skins with better resistance to mechanical damage during harvest.
  • Common scab resistance: Research consistently shows that sulphate of potash, combined with healthy soil biology, reduces the incidence and severity of common scab (Streptomyces scabies).
  • Storage performance: Tubers with adequate K levels store better, with lower weight loss and reduced susceptibility to storage diseases.

Recommended SoilWorx products for potatoes

K-Boost 3-2-17
High Potassium for Tuber Crops

K-Boost is purpose-built for potassium-hungry crops. With an NPK of 3-2-17, it delivers a concentrated dose of potassium alongside essential base nutrition and 60%+ organic matter. Applied pre-planting, K-Boost ensures potassium availability through the critical tuber initiation and bulking phases.

Dynamo 4-2-3
Balanced Base Nutrition

Use Dynamo as a complementary base dressing to provide additional nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter. The 4-2-3 analysis delivers balanced nutrition that supports early canopy development without over-supplying nitrogen.

Common scab and soil health

Common scab is one of the most persistent quality issues for potato growers. While there is no single solution, the evidence is clear that soil health plays a major role in managing the disease:

  • Soil pH management: Scab thrives in alkaline conditions. Organic fertilisers tend to have a mildly acidifying effect, helping to maintain the slightly acid pH (5.0–6.0) that discourages the pathogen.
  • Microbial competition: Soils rich in organic matter support diverse microbial communities that compete with and suppress Streptomyces scabies.
  • Soil moisture: Organic matter improves water-holding capacity, helping to maintain the consistent moisture levels during tuber initiation that reduce scab incidence.

By building organic matter with every application, SoilWorx products contribute to a soil environment that naturally suppresses common scab over time.

Frequently asked questions

Potatoes require a fertiliser high in potassium with balanced nitrogen and phosphorus. SoilWorx K-Boost 3-2-17 is specifically designed for potassium-demanding crops like potatoes, delivering slow-release organic nutrition alongside soil-building organic matter.

Apply the main dressing 2–4 weeks before planting to allow nutrient availability by the time roots begin to explore the soil. For maincrop varieties with longer growing seasons, a supplementary application at emergence may be beneficial.

Yes. SoilWorx crop nutrition products are safe for use in Class 1 veg and all crops and are used by professional potato growers across the UK and Ireland. Our fertilisers are OMRI Listed and Organic Trust certified, suitable for both conventional and organic production systems.

While no fertiliser can eliminate common scab entirely, building soil organic matter and microbial diversity through organic fertiliser use has been shown to reduce scab incidence. Maintaining adequate potassium levels also supports stronger skin formation.

Muriate of potash delivers potassium but adds no organic matter and can increase soil salinity. K-Boost provides potassium alongside balanced NPK and 60%+ organic matter, improving soil structure and biology with every application.
