Organic Bone Meal Pellets phosphorus-rich natural fertiliser

Organic Bone Meal Pellets phosphorus-rich natural fertiliser

The organic specialist for roots, flowers and fruit.

SoilWorx Organic Bone Meal Pellets are a 100% chemical-free fertiliser naturally rich in phosphorus — the nutrient most responsible for strong root development, abundant flowering and better fruit production. With the highest NPK in the SoilWorx retail range at 6-4-1, these pellets pack more nutrition per gram than any other product in our range.

Made in the UK from the highest quality, locally sourced bone meal, this is a traditional gardening ingredient manufactured to modern standards — consistent, convenient and effective.

Why phosphorus matters

Every gardener knows about nitrogen for leafy growth, but phosphorus is the unsung hero of the garden. It plays a critical role in three key areas:

Root Development

Phosphorus is essential for root cell division and growth. Plants with access to adequate phosphorus develop larger, more efficient root systems that can reach more water and nutrients in the soil. This is why bone meal has been the go-to fertiliser for planting trees, shrubs, roses and bulbs for generations.

Flower and Fruit Production

Phosphorus drives the energy transfer processes that plants use to produce flowers and set fruit. If your roses aren’t flowering well, your fruit trees are dropping blossom or your tomatoes aren’t setting, phosphorus deficiency could be the cause.

Overall Plant Energy

Phosphorus is involved in photosynthesis and energy transfer at a cellular level. Plants with sufficient phosphorus are simply more efficient at converting sunlight into growth.

SoilWorx Bone Meal Pellets deliver a phosphorus level of 4 — double that of our standard chicken manure pellets — making them the product of choice when phosphorus is what your garden needs most.

Key benefits

  • Highest NPK in the SoilWorx range
At 6-4-1, these pellets deliver the most concentrated nutrition of any SoilWorx retail product. The nitrogen content of 6 also provides excellent leafy growth alongside the phosphorus boost.
  • 100% chemical free
Made entirely from natural bone meal with no synthetic additives. What goes into your soil is pure, natural and traceable.
  • UK made from locally sourced materials
Produced at the SoilWorx plant in the UK, using sustainably sourced raw materials from UK and Irish agriculture.
  • Perfect for planting
Bone meal’s slow-release phosphorus makes it ideal for incorporating into planting holes when putting in trees, shrubs, roses and perennials. The nutrients are released gradually into the root zone exactly where they’re needed most.
  • Pellet convenience
Traditional bone meal can be dusty and unpleasant to handle. SoilWorx bone meal pellets are clean, uniform and easy to apply — no dust, no mess.

How to use Bone Meal Pellets

When to apply

Apply from March through September for general feeding. Bone meal is particularly valuable at planting time — work it into the planting hole whenever you’re putting in new trees, shrubs, roses, perennials or bulbs. Autumn bulb planting is another prime opportunity to use bone meal.

Best plants for Bone Meal

  • Roses — Bone meal has been the rose grower’s secret weapon for centuries. Apply 200g per square metre around established roses in March, working it into the soil surface. For new roses, mix a generous handful into the planting hole.
  • Bulbs — When planting spring or autumn bulbs, sprinkle bone meal pellets into the planting hole. The phosphorus encourages strong root development over winter and bigger, bolder flowers in spring.
  • Fruit Trees and Bushes — Apple trees, pear trees, plum trees, blackcurrant bushes and raspberry canes all benefit from the phosphorus boost. Apply 300g per square metre around the root zone in early spring.
  • Root Vegetables — Carrots, parsnips, beetroot and turnips all rely on phosphorus for root development. Work bone meal pellets into the soil before sowing.
  • Perennials and Shrubs — Any new perennial or shrub benefits from bone meal at planting time. The slow-release phosphorus supports root establishment during the critical first year.

Frequently asked questions

Bone meal is a natural source of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N). Phosphorus is the nutrient most responsible for root development, flower production and fruit set. By providing slow-release phosphorus directly to the root zone, bone meal helps plants establish stronger root systems, produce more flowers and set more fruit. SoilWorx Bone Meal Pellets have an NPK of 6-4-1, delivering both high phosphorus and high nitrogen in a single product.

Bone meal is one of the best fertilisers for roses. The phosphorus promotes the strong root system roses need, while also supporting abundant flower production. Rose growers have used bone meal for generations, and SoilWorx bone meal pellets make application cleaner and more convenient than traditional powdered bone meal. Apply in March and again after the first flowering in June for best results.

Apply from March through September for general feeding. The most important application times are: at planting time (for trees, shrubs, roses, perennials and bulbs); in early spring as established plants begin growing; and in autumn when planting spring-flowering bulbs. Avoid applying in winter when nutrients may be washed away before plants can use them.

Yes. Bone meal is particularly good for root vegetables (carrots, parsnips, beetroot) that depend on phosphorus for root development, and for fruiting vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, courgettes) that need phosphorus for fruit set. Work it into the soil before sowing or planting at 200g per square metre.

Bone meal (NPK 6-4-1) is higher in phosphorus and is primarily used to promote root development, flowering and fruiting. Blood and bone (or SoilWorx Blood, Bone & Poultry Manure, NPK 5-2-3) provides higher potassium and broader organic matter content, making it a more general-purpose feed. Choose bone meal when your priority is roots, flowers or fruit. Choose blood, bone and poultry for all-round garden feeding.

SoilWorx Bone Meal Pellets are made from natural bone meal and are not toxic. However, dogs in particular can be attracted to the smell and may try to eat the pellets or dig in freshly treated soil. If you have pets, water the pellets in well after application and consider covering treated areas temporarily. If a pet consumes a large quantity, seek veterinary advice as a precaution.
